MNAs oath under 1973 Constitution, says Ranjha

ISLAMABAD, Oct 15: Law Minister Dr Khalid Ranjha on Tuesday said the newly elected members of the National Assembly will take oath under the 1973 Constitution.

Speaking to Geo television, Dr Ranjha said National Assembly will function under the 1973 Constitution and sit in session after the restoration of the Constitution.

He said the oath taking of the newly elected members of the National Assembly is a non-issue. The oath is a part of the Constitution and is written in a schedule.

Dr Ranjha said President Musharraf under the Legal Framework Order (LFO) will notify date for the restoration of the constitution after which National Assembly will start its proceedings. National Assembly will function according to the Constitution.

Gen Musharraf has become president under the LFO. Election for the president will not be held and his tenure will start on the day when prime minister resumes his duties as the new chief executive, he added.

He said after Oct 12, the political parties approached the Supreme Court to declare the assumption of power by Gen Musharraf as illegal.

The Supreme Court in its decision then declared that the intervention on Oct 12 was right and the government had the authority to initiate reforms and amend the Constitution by staying within certain parameters, he added.—APP
