HYDERABAD, Oct 14: The managing director, Water & Sanitation Agency (Wasa), Hyderabad Development Authority, has informed the general public that the power breakdowns on Sunday and Monday have caused a severe water shortage in Paretabad, Hussainabad, Latifabad Unit No10, and Hyderabad city.

He said that the breakdowns took place at the Thandi Sarak pumping station from 9am to 10am on Monday, Unit No4 & 10 Latifabad pumping stations from 9am to 3pm on Monday, and the Paretabad water works from 11am on Sunday to 3:30pm on Monday (15 hours and 30 minutes).

He said that these power breakdowns had caused a severe water shortage and it would take at least three to four days to normalize the water supply position provided there was no further power breakdown.

SHO SACKED: The regional police officer, Hyderabad, Abdul Rauf Yousufzai has demoted Sub-inspector Usman Laghari, former SHO Tando Allahyar police station, to the rank of ASI for keeping a man in illegal confinement and releasing him after taking illegal gratification of Rs30,000 from him.

The action was taken on the report of the departmental inquiry committee in which these allegations had been proved.

There were also reports that the above police officer was supporting dacoits which had been proved in the report of the inquiry committee.

Mr Yousufzai on the receipt of this report terminated the services of ASI Usman Leghari.

TRIBUTE PAID: Rich tribute was paid to noted writer Hameed Sindhi for his services to Sindhi literature on the occasion of his 63rd birthday at a function held on Sunday under the aegis of the Bazm-i-Rooh-Rehan Literary Organization, which is headed by Mr Sindhi.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr G. A. Allana said that under a planned conspiracy the writing of the history of Sindhi literature had been stopped.

He said that this had been purposely done to keep the youth of Sindh ignorant of the history of Sindhi literature.

He paid rich tribute to Hameed Sindhi for his contribution in the promotion of Sindhi language and literature.

He said that whenever the history of Sindhi literature was written, Hameed Sindhi would find a prominent place in the book.

He said that Sindh was in the grip of many crisis besides an acute shortage of water and the non-development of the Sindhi language.

He said that in order to resolve the problems confronting Sindh, the writers would have to sharpen their pens and use them as weapons.

The others who spoke on the occasion included Mehtab Mehboob, Parwana Bhatti, Taj Joyo, Taj Baloch, Mohammad Ali Diplai, and Dr Habibullah Siddiqui.
