KARACHI, Oct 14: The leaders of the Pakistan People’s Party Parliamentarians and Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal met here on Monday to discuss the results of the general elections and various options for the formation of the government at the provincial level.
The meeting was held between Taj Haider, former senator and Prof Ghafoor Ahmed, Naib Amir, Jamaat-i-Islami at the latter’s residence.
Both leaders agreed that since Sindh was the most sensitive province of Pakistan and had been a victim of terrorism and killings since the last 15 years, it was essential for the PPP and MMA to cooperate with each other.
Prof Ghafoor advised the PPP leader that Benazir Bhutto must take care while issuing statements regarding the MMA. He was of the view that national parties should continue the consultation process, and any step should be taken with mutual understanding.
Both leaders demanded of the government and the Election Commission to take note of the complaints pertaining to rigging in the election. They also stressed that the government should not interfere in the formation of governments at the centre and provinces, and that the parties should be allowed to form the governments as per their positions in the respective houses.
Prof Ghafoor and Taj Haider made it clear that any attempt aimed at impairing the sovereignty of parliament will not be accepted, and in such case, all the parties would adopt a united stand.
FURTHER DISCUSSIONS: Prof Ghafoor Ahmed on Monday visited the residence of PPP leader Prof N.D. Khan and discussed the post-election scenario, and exchanged views on the possibilities of cooperation amongst the parliamentary groups of both parties.
Khan revealed that the meeting lasted for over 75 minutes, during which they discussed matters of national interest and felt that there was closeness in the views on the constitutional package and presidential referendum.
There were other points on which the PPP and MMA had identical thoughts, Khan said.—PPI
