Probe into woman’s death begins

By Our Correspondent

GILGIT, Oct 13: The police have started investigation into the death of Ms Sameera who died on Sept 18 during an operation at a private hospital.

Her relatives approached the Cantonment police to establish the cause of death as they were skeptical about the reliability of the operation conducted by Dr Toba Yawar.

Her sisters, Ms Surriya and Ms Shareefun Nisa, claimed that Ms Sameera, a resident of Nagar, was normal when she was admitted to the hospital but her operation was carried out when she was reportedly having a high blood pressure.

They alleged that the attendants were asked at around 2:00 am to arrange the O-negative blood group after conducting the operation, which they failed to arrange at that time.

The relatives accused the doctor of negligence saying that the demand for the rare blood group was made to save the skin.

When contacted, Dr Toba said that the patient was brought at around 1:00 am for operation. As the child delivery time was not mature Ms Sameera was admitted for rest. Her attendants were not asked to arrange the required blood because the operation was not due, but after some time the patient got her womb ruptured and excessive bleeding ensued, the doctor claimed.

Dr Toba said that in order to save her life she had to be operate and asked for the blood, but owing to its non- availability the patient died.

The police, however, said that they would lodge the FIR only after examining the facts and circumstances that led to her death.
