ISLAMABAD, Oct 11: The results of 192 National Assembly seats announced by the Election Commission till Friday evening showed that eight women have made it to parliament on general seats.
A total of 60 women had filed nomination papers for 242 general seats of the National Assembly.
Twice-elected prime minister and Chairperson of Pakistan People’s Party, Benazir Bhutto, could not take part in the election for being convicted in a NAB case.
Her sister-in-law and chief of PPP (Shaheed Bhutto) Ghinwa Bhutto was also ruled out of the election race after she failed to meet the graduation condition set for the elections.
Those who lost in election to general seats included some known figures like former ministers Begum Abida Hussain and Tehmina Daultana. President Women Wing of Pakistan Muslim League (Q) Nilofar Bakhtiyar who was contesting from NA-56, Rawalpindi, was defeated by Sheikh Rashid Ahmed, a former Muslim Leaguer contesting as an independent candidate.
Two women, Samina Khalid and Mrs Khalid Mohsin Ali Qureshi, who contested election on PPP tickets from NA-130 Lahore XIII, and NA-176 Muzaffargarh-I, respectively, won the polls.
Eeman Waseem, Rifat Javaid and Hina Rabbani Khar who fought on PML(Q) ticket, returned to the National Assembly.
Former education minister Zubaida Jalal, who contested the election as an independent candidate from NA-272 Kech-cum-Gwadar, won the seat by securing 43,670 votes.
Saima Akhtar Bharwana was the other independent candidate who emerged victorious from NA-90 Jhang-V by bagging 56,571 votes.
Sumera Malik fielded by National Alliance, also won the elections from NA-69, Khushab-I.
