Karachi Whites in tri-series

KARACHI, Oct 11: Karachi Whites stormed through to next week’s triangular series with a crushing 140-run win over Quetta in the National Junior (Under-19) Grade-I Cricket Tournament tie at NBP Sports Complex here Friday.

Karachi Whites, for whom skipper Khalid Latif and Khurram Manzoor struck centuries, qualified on net run-rate after their junior string Karachi Blues upset Bahawalpur’s hopes in the other Pool ‘A’ tie at National Stadium.

Khurram dominated the massive opening partnership of 291 by blasting 158 off 149 deliveries with the aid of 14 fours and six sixes.

Khalid remained unbeaten on 120, which were scored off 142 balls and included nine fours and four sixes, as Karachi Whites ran up a huge score of 317 for one in their 50 overs after winning the toss.

Quetta, in reply, were restricted to 177 for eight. Shaukat Ali making 58 not out off 115 balls. Spinners Aftab Ahmed and Faraz Ahmed Khan did a good containing job as they shared five wickets between them.

Bahawalpur, meanwhile, just needed to beat Karachi Blues but failed in their bid as they lost by 50 runs.

For Karachi Blues, the deposed champions, Mansoor Ali excelled with a fine all-round performance. He made 88 off as many balls in his side’s total of 248 for five and then took two for 35.

Our Sports Reporter adds from Rawalpindi: Rawalpindi suffered a two-wicket defeat against Fata at Rawalpindi Stadium that dashed their hopes of making further progress.

Fata, who overhauled Rawalpindi’s total of 209, for the loss of eight wickets and went through by virtue of topping Group ‘C’ following victories over Peshawar and Kohat in previous matches.

Waqas Zafar scored 46 and Usman Saeed hit 43 in Rawalpindi’s total that came off 49.5 overs.

Seemab Hussain captured three for 33 to restrict the home side while Yasir Shah, Hilal Afridi and Mumtaz Khan took two wickets each.

In their run chase, Fata were helped by Naveed Ahmed’s grand knock of 119, coming off 163 balls laced with seven fours and four sixes.

Islamabad suffered their third straight defeat, losing by one run to Lahore Whites at Shalimar Ground in a shortened match.

Carelessness of the ground staff, who watered the pitch the previous evening without knowing there was a match scheduled at the venue, meant a delay of two hours. As a result the game had to be reduced to 40-overs-a-side.

Our Sports Correspondent adds from Lahore: A responsible innings of 86 by Atif Ijaz, equally supported by skipper Shahnawaz Malik (50), steered Lahore Blues into the next round.

 Atif and Shahnawaz shared a fourth-wicket stand of 103 as Lahore Blues defeated Sheikhupura by four wickets in the crucial Pool ‘B’ match at Gaddafi Stadium.

After being asked to bat first, Sheikhupura were set for a big total when they reached 172-2 in the 35th over. But a startling collapse saw the remaining eight wickets crashing for the addition of 44 runs.

Khalil Ahmed fell seven short of his century. He put on 117 fir the second wicket with Salman Ali (48). Khalil’s 93 off 114 balls was laced with nine boundaries.
