KARACHI, Oct 11: The Karachiites experiencing one of the hottest spells during the current year have been advised to adopt precautionary measures and avoid heatstroke.

Doctors talking to APP on Friday said the extreme weather conditions made it necessary for people to ensure that they are attired in loose and light-coloured clothes, preferably cotton, with their heads covered.

Exposure to the scorching sun causing severe perspiration also required consumption of a lot of liquid in the form of water and juice to avoid dehydration, they said.

For those inflicted with sun stroke, it was suggested that in case one got fainted, he must be immediately brought to a shaded and cool place and his head be immediately soaked with cold water or an ice cube be kept on the head.

The doctors did not recommend any medication except after consultation by a physician.

Physicians have emphasized that people should avoid self-medication.
