PESHAWAR, Oct 10: A large number of voters did not turn up for voting due to the non-availability of national identity cards in Peshawar district and its surrounding areas; voters also complained of inaccurate lists.
Polling staff and agents for various candidates complained that genuine voters visited their respective polling stations, but could not cast their votes due to non-availability identity cards.
Information gathered by Dawn after visiting various polling stations revealed that in some polling booths, many voters produced their passports, domicile certificates or driving licences for the purpose of identification, but were not allowed to vote.
Haroon Khan, a political workers argued that “the election commission should have enforced the national identity cards condition only if every voter was provided with one “.
He said that with the lowering of the voters’ age to 18 years the authorities should have acted fast in providing NICs to youngsters.
A presiding officer at Peshawar City High School No-I said that since morning the election staff disallowed almost 10 people from voting for not possessing NICs, an official said.
People complained that National Database Registration Authority (Nadra) had failed to provide computerized NIC to the eligible voters, which was one of the reasons for low turnout.
