Najaf grabs hat trick as Pindi triumph

By Our Sports Reporter

RAWALPINDI, Oct 9: Opener Waqas Zafar hammered a century and strike bowler Najaf Shah claimed a hat trick to help Rawalpindi score a crushing 112-run victory against Kohat in the National Junior (Under-19) One-day Tournament Wednesday.

Waqas struck nine boundaries in his knock of 102 that took him 136 deliveries as Rawalpindi piled up 242 for nine off their 50 overs at Rawalpindi Stadium. The other notable scorer for the home side was Shoaib Nasir who contributed 40 with three hits to the ropes.

The chief wicket-taker for Kohat was right-arm pacer Shams-ul-Qamar who captured three for 43 with his strike partner Shahid Zaman taking two for 44.

When Kohat batted, Najaf winged in to wreck their middle order, bowling out Habib Rasool (18) and Shahzad Khan (0) off the last two deliveries in one over and then returned to complete his hat trick in the following over, sending back Fawwad Shah for just two runs.

He had earlier trapped top-scorer Ehtesham Bukhari leg before for 33 as the left-armer returned figures of four for 30 off his 10 overs, three of which were maiden. Shahid Mahmood also bowled well to pick up three for 50.

Rawalpindi’s victory was their second in a row in the tournament and they now face Fata in their next match at the same venue to decide who qualify for the triangular series from this pool.

Our Sports Reporter adds from Karachi: It was a miserable day for both Karachi teams as they suffered unexpected defeats.

Karachi Whites lost to Bahawalpur by 12 runs at UBL Sports Complex after making a hash of a target of only 152.

Karachi Blues, meanwhile, were bundled out for 99 with pacer Shaukat Ali claiming five for 35 in the other tie at National Stadium.

Quetta lost six wickets before victory was finally achieved in the 27th over.

Bahawalpur remain the only unbeaten side in this group. A win over Karachi Blues on Friday will see them through to the tri-series in Lahore.

Our Sports Correspondent adds from Lahore: Lahore Blues defeated Islamabad by 70 runs at Gaddafi Stadium after twin brothers Asim Ijaz and Atif Ijaz shared a fifth-wicket partnership of 148.

Asim, who remained unbeaten on 89, and the left-handed Atif (81) came together after the home team had lost the first four wickets for just 38 runs.

Lahore Blues’ total of 226 for five proved too much for Islamabad, who were bowled out for 156 in 43.4 overs.

The qualifiers from this pool will be decided on Friday when Lahore Blues face Sheikhupura, winners by 50 runs against Lahore Whites on Wednesday.
