ISLAMABAD, Oct 8: Fahad Khan, teaming up with Sohan Patrick of Sri Lanka, Tuesday earned a quarterfinal ticket in the ITF Pakistan International Junior Tennis Championship II at the Islamabad Club knocking out Shahid Afridi and Mansoor Khan in three sets.
After early hiccups that saw them lose the first set, Fahad and Patrick got their act together to win the next two to take the match 0-6, 6-1, 6-4.
It was a creditable achievement by the pair who recovered well from the first set blanking to turn the tables on their rivals.
Also making the last eight grade was the team of Alamgir Wali and S. Kumail Rizvi who had an easy outing against Suleman Bashir and Danish Ahmed whom they defeated 6-0, 6-4.
The Thai duo of Kirati Siributwong and Narucha Wannabovorn also did not have to exert much, outplaying Aftab Anwar and Zeeshan Khan 6-3, 6-1.
The boys singles pre-quarterfinals were also played Tuesday with top seed Shahzad Khan, Ashiq Munir, Alamgir Wali, Syed Kumail Rizvi, Babar Ali Khan and Wasif Cheema clinching their berths in the quarters. Kirati Siributwong and Sri Lankan Godamanne Harshana also went through.
Babar, of Rawalpindi, sprang a surprise by eliminating Karachi’s Muteeb Pasha 6-1, 6-1 with a powerful display of strokes from the baseline.
Alamgir Wali, losing finalist of the first leg last week, ousted Shahid Afridi 7-6, 6-4, 6-2 in a hotly-contested match.
In the girls singles, China’s Shuang Wu qualified for the semifinals with a 6-1, 6-1 hammering of Sri Lanka’s Jancy Paramanthan while Thailand’s Buaklee Prim blanked Ayesha Mansoor 6-0, 6-0. Mehak Khan also went through to the pre-finals beating Maira Rahim 1-6, 6-2, 6-0 and Shuai Zhang of China blew Sri Lankan Nawchali Desilva away with a 6-2, 6-0 win.
