FAISALABAD, Oct 8: Hundreds of doctors, teachers and students on Tuesday protested against the denationalization policy of the government.
They took out processions and staged a sit-in in front of the district council offices.
Processions were taken out from the Government Islami College, the Government Degree College, the Government Municipal Degree College, the University of Agriculture, the Punjab Medical College, the Allied and DHQ hospitals besides over a dozen schools of the city.
The processionists gathered at the Pakistan Model High School from where the main procession was taken out.
Punjab Professors and Lecturers Association president Nazim Husnain and Pakistan Medical Association president Prof Dr Yasmin Rashid led the main procession.
The protesters were chanting slogans against the government and carrying banner and placards inscribed with their demands.
After marching various roads, they reached the district council intersection and blocked it for traffic. Later, they staged a sit-in in front of the district council offices.
Representatives of doctors, teachers and students also spoke to the protesters.
They alleged that the government was ‘humiliating’ teachers and doctors to please the IMF and the World Bank.
They regretted that some illiterate people had been appointed to monitor the working of highly educated professionals.
They condemned the suspension of Dr Yasmin Rashid from service. They threatened that in case the decision was not withdrawn immediately, a province-wide protest movement would be launched.
