FAISALABAD, Oct 5: Hundreds of private transport vehicles were impounded by police and district administrations in the Punjab on Saturday for Oct 10 elections.
Reports from a number of districts said that officials of police and district administrations dragged many passengers out of the vehicles.
The Punjab government had recently debarred the police and district administrations throughout the province from impounding private transport vehicles for Oct 10 elections.
In a directive, the police and district administration were asked to hire vehicles with the cooperation of transporters and adda managers. The government had transferred the funds to the district administrations for the purpose.
The transporters and adda managers had refused to provide vehicles for election duty.
In Faisalabad, a large number of people were seen on bus and wagon stops in city and its suburbs. Schoolchildren, women and elderly people suffered most.
Some vehicles with the names and symbols of the candidates were also impounded besides the official vehicles of the SNGPL, the PTCL, Fesco and other departments.
SHEIKHUPURA: The district administration with the help of traffic police started impounding transport vehicles on Saturday morning.
A large number of commuters were seen on wagons and bus stops. Many of them had to hire taxis and rickshaws to reach their destinations.
Most transporters parked their vehicles at ‘safer’ places to avoid impounding.
A traffic police spokesman told this correspondent that the campaign to impound the vehicles for election duty would be accelerated from Monday.
