KARACHI, Oct. 3: The district and sessions judge, South, Agha Rafique Ahmed Khan, sentenced a bandit to suffer rigorous imprisonment for 14 years on two counts of house robbery.
The judge awarded a seven-year term to Sher Afzal for committing robbery in the house of Raza Hasan in the Kalri police limits. The judge also imposed a fine of Rs20,000 on the convict, who would have to undergo an additional six-month term in case of default on the payment.
The bandit was sentenced to another seven-year term of rigorous imprisonment for committing robbery in the house of Mohammed Arshad in Kalri. He was fined Rs70,000.
KIDNAPPING: The Anti-terrorism Court No. 2, headed by Judge Feroze Mehmood Bhatti, recorded the statement of accused persons in a kidnapping for ransom case and put off the hearing till Friday.
The case against Dr Khalid Moeen, belonging to the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, Mohammed Salim Khan Tanoli, a former protocol officer of the Sindh government, Salim Uddin, a former police constable, and Sami Ullah was registered by the North Nazimabad police on the complaint of Shahid Ali Siddiqui.
According to the prosecution, the accused kidnapped the complainant and his young son at gunpoint on January 31, 2000 and released them after receiving Rs5.5 million. The payment was made through two cheques of Rs4 million and Rs1.5 million respectively.
All four accused in their statements denied their involvement in the case.
Dr Khalid Moeen, Salim Tanoli and Salim Uddin had been convicted by Judge Abdul Ghafoor Memon on July 25 in another kidnapping for ransom case. They were sentenced to life in jail.
INQUIRY: The judicial magistrate, South, Rahmat Ullah Moro, ordered on Thursday that he would himself conduct the inquiry into a direct complaint against the chief of the Citizen-Police Liaison Committee and 19 others, for involving an army officer in a Hudood case.
