LAHORE, Oct 2: The Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) has sent ‘evidence of massive’ pre-poll rigging to Mr Romano Prodl, president of the European Union, in Brussels.
A statement released by the PML-N international affairs office in London on Wednesday said the president of the office, Mr. Mohammad Ishaq Dar, had written a letter to the EU president that detailed the instances of pre-poll rigging by the military regime backed by concrete evidence.
In his letter to Mr Prodi, Dar condemned the latest attempt by Pervez Musharraf to justify his regime’s pre-poll rigging by implying that, somehow, it was part of Pakistani ‘political culture.’
“It were ambitious military dictators like Musharraf have repeatedly violated their oath to the constitution by overthrowing democratically elected governments and perpetuating their rule by unlawful acts.
“The PML-N feels it is necessary to reassure the international community that conspiring against political governments, violating the constitution, arresting, torturing and humiliating politicians and perpetuating dictatorships through rigged referendums and elections may be part of the political culture of military dictators but the people of Pakistan, represented by democratically elected governments, believe in the supremacy of law and remain committed to democracy.”
The PML-N has already sent the pre-poll rigging evidence to the Commonwealth, the statement said.
