‘More violations of civil liberties in military rule’

SUKKUR, Oct 2: There are more violations of human rights during the military rule than during the tenure of civilian governments, speakers at a seminar said the other day.

The seminar was organised jointly by the South Asia Partnership, Lahore, and the Bhitshah Declaration Coordination Council. It was participated by workers and candidates of various political parties. of the division including the contesting

The speakers accused both the military and civil bureaucracy of colluding in violation of law.

They blamed the government of violating human rights and maltreating political leaders, saying that the democratic governments cannot even think of trampling the human rights.

The speakers said the people had greater access to justice during democratic governments than during military rule.

The majority of the speakers alleged that the democracy was not given ample time to flourish and civilian governments were dismissed on one pretext or the other.

Participants belonging to the PPP and the PML-N termed the treatment meted out to Benazir Bhutto, Asif Zardari and Nawaz Sharif gross violation of basic human rights.

They said that the real democracy could only return to Pakistan only after reduction in these violations.

The participants also stressed on the need for a free judiciary, saying that only an independent judiciary can act as the custodian of civil liberties.

Speakers from both sides of the political divide accused the civil and military bureaucracy of interfering in the election process.

The government, they said, needed a parliament, which could stamp out its wrongdoings.

Those who spoke on the occasion included the central coordinator of the Bhitshah Declaration Coordination Council, Lala Arshad Khaskheli, the chief organiser of Pakistan Awami Tehrik, Makhdoom Nadeem Hashmi, Syed Khurshid Ahmed Shah of the PPP, central Naib Amir of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam, Maulana Mohammad Murad Halejvi, the joint secretary of the PML-N Sindh, Mumtaz Shoro, the Naib Amir of Jamaat-i-Islami Sindh, Mumtaz Hussain Sehto, a candidate for the provincial assembly, Huma Naz Shaikh and the coordinator of Aurat Foundation, Jam Muneer Ahmed.
