PESHAWAR, Sept 30: The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has started installing high-tech screening equipment donated by the US FBI at the Peshawar airport.
According to official sources, technicians have started installation of computers and other necessary equipment at the immigration counter of the airport. These equipment would start functioning soon.
The FIA officials said installation of computers and screening equipment was likely to be completed within a month and the Peshawar airport would be linked with other airports, including Karachi and Lahore.
The FBI has already set up its database counters at the immigration sections of Karachi and Lahore airports with a view to detecting suspects.
The sources said the names and particulars of persons wanted by the FBI would be fed into the computer data. The immigration staff will also maintain the records of the incoming and outgoing passengers in the data bank as the FBI would have a direct access to the data bank.
The FBI officials visited Peshawar airport in March to prepare a feasibility report about the project. The FIA immigration staff had already completed basic training course and would operate the equipment.
