KARACHI, Sept 29: Filthy water gushing out from a many gutters has spread on a number of streets of different localities of the city.
The hard-hit areas include Dadabhoy Town, Mehmoodabad, the Karachi Administration Cooperative Housing Society, parts of PECHS Block 6 and its green-belt area.
Residents of the affected localities complain that on the one hand dirty sewage water coming out from choked gutters has been stranded on a number of streets, and on the other they are being supplied stinking water.
Though the inhabitants of the affected areas suspect that sewage water may have intruded into the pipelines supplying water to their localities, but the KWSB officials insist that such a situation has arisen following the burst of a 48-inch dia sewerage line because of increased pressure.
The KWSB officials say that repair of the sewerage line has already been initiated and it will be completed by Monday.
Residents of the affected areas complain that although a number of streets of their localities have been stinking badly for a fortnight because of overflowing sewerage lines for the last couple of days, the concerned officials of the KWSB have not yet taken measures to rectify the fault responsible for choked gutters and sewerage lines.
Complaints about contaminated water have been received from Dadabhoy Town, PECHS’ Block 6 (green-belt area) and Mehmoodabad No 1.
Residents resent that they have been facing the problem of contaminated water as well as of overflowing gutters for one week and the concerned officials of the Board have neither managed to clear the choked sewerage lines nor have they succeeded in rectifying the fault responsible for contaminated water.
They have demanded of the city Nazim and the KWSB managing director to direct the concerned officials to immediately rectify the situation, or else people would be exposed to serious health hazards.
WATER SHORTAGE: Complaints of acute water shortage continue to pour in newspaper offices from different sectors of Orangi, Baldia, North Karachi, Surjani townships and Shershah.
Residents of the affected localities complain that although an acute water shortage has persisted for the past two months, the concerned engineers of the KWSB have not yet bothered to ensure normal supply. Resultantly, they have no choice but to drink subsoil unhygienic water at the cost of their health.
