Growers hold demo

Published September 20, 2002

DADU, Sept 19: A large number of growers staged a demonstration in Johi on Thursday to protest against the acute water shortage in 30 waterways originating from the Johi Branch.

The growers carrying banners and placards raised slogans against the officials of the irrigation department.

Addressing the protesters, the president, Abadgars Association, Ghulam Qadir Rind, said that the irrigation officials had sold the water share of small growers to influential landlords of Mehar, Khairpur Nathan Shah, and Dadu Talukas.

He said that the residents of several villages of Johi Taluka badly needed water for drinking.

He appealed to the authorities to direct the irrigation officials to provide water.—BoC
