NEW DELHI, Sept 14: India has rejected the remarks by UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan in which he had warned that South Asia could attract international involvement if the situation worsened any further, the Press Trust of India said on Saturday.
“We, of course, do not agree with Kofi Annan’s assessment of the situation,” India’s National Security Adviser Brajesh Mishra told reporters in New York on Friday, while reacting sharply to Annan’s assessment on Thursday at the UN General Assembly.
Annan had said the “underlying causes” for the Indo-Pakistan tensions must be addressed while noting that the situation in the region remained “perilous”.
Mishra pointed out that Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee had specifically criticised those who called for the “underlying causes” to be dealt with, PTI said.—JN
