Mushtaq teams up with Sussex

Published September 14, 2002

LONDON, Sept 13: Pakistan leg-spinner Mushtaq Ahmed will play for Sussex in the English county championship next season, the club said on Friday.

The 32-year-old veteran of 50 Test matches and 143 one-day internationals has played for Surrey in this season’s championship as a replacement for compatriot and fellow spin bowler Saqlain Mushtaq.

Mushtaq, who last played Test cricket for his country against New Zealand in March 2001, will join Zimbabwean batsman Murray Goodwin at Sussex with English counties permitted to sign two overseas players for next season as opposed to just one this year.

“Mushtaq will contribute an added variation to our attack and crucially will help to open sides up on flat wickets which has sometimes been a problem in the past,” said Sussex manager Peter Moores.

“His commitment to come back and prove he is still one of the world’s top flight spinners came across loud and clear and a hungry man with talent is one to watch.”—Reuters

WASIM TO PLAY FOR OTAGO

DUNEDIN (New Zealand): Former Pakistan cricket international Mohammad Wasim will play representative cricket in New Zealand this season.

Wasim, 25, signed Friday to play for the southern province Otago in domestic one-day and first-class matches.

A right-hand batsman and occasional leg-spin bowler, Wasim scored a Test century on debut against New Zealand in the 1996-97 season. He played 18 Tests and 25 one-day internationals for Pakistan.—APP
