Pistol Pete should pick up the spoils

By Aftab Gilani

LAHORE, Sept 10: An ordinary card of six events, comprising mostly out-of-form runners, has been laid out for the mid-week Lahore Gymkhana races to be held at the Racecourse on Wednesday. All races will be contested over the sprinting distance of 1000 metres.

In half of the events the fields are tiny. The fourth, fifth and sixth races have only seven runners each, if there are no last- minute withdrawals. The fourth race has nine and the first and second consists of 13 and 12 acceptor.

The feature event, the Pakpattan Plate Class VII Division IV & V combined , is an all out-of-form affair.

Of the total seven runners the top weight chestnut gelding Pistol Pete carrying nine stones six pounds, should pick up the spoils. Although he is a bit slow to take a start yet, class-wise he looks better.

With a good rider up in the saddle he should prove his worth. He may face a strong challenge from the grey colt Al Jarrar and lowly placed Aao Payar Se.

The other four runners have not shown any recent form. This will be the last race on the day’s card.

The bay mare Jungle Beat looks a good proposition in the fifth and supporting event.

The mare ran a good race on Aug 7 last but finished off the board last Sunday.

She is vying against a mediocre field and should make amends this time with the connections support.

The bay Royal Man and the chestnut colt Blue Champion are the next best in the same order. On pedigree, Fly To The Stars sounds good but is running after a long absence from the track which could create doubts about his fitness.

The chestnut gelding Sun Of Gold, who had finished a good second behind Track Star on Aug 7 last should make amends for his defeat that day. Blessed, Tiger’s Wood and Sugar Dady may fight for the places.

Meanwhile the Lahore Race Club (LRC) has decided to hold four cup events named after another four war heroes and recipients of the highest gallantry award, Nishan-i-Haider, on Sunday (Sept 15).

They are: Lance Naik Mohammad Mahfooz Shaheed Cup, Sawar Mohammad Hussain Shaheed Cup, Havildar Lalik Jan Shaheed Cup and Capt. Sarwar Shaheed Cup.

This is for the first time that the LRC has honoured all the recipients of Nishan-i-Haider.
