KARACHI, Sept 10: Inaugurating an exhibition of newspapers containing reports and photographs on the Sept 11 tragedy, entitled ‘Headlines of history: September 11, 2001’, Sindh Governor Mohammedmian Soomro said here on Tuesday that attacks on the World Trade Towers and the Pentagon had left a very deep impact on the world.
“It was an act which took many precious lives of innocent people from 90 countries and this day we must pay tributes to those who helped salvage the situation,” he said.
“This day, we should look at and analyse the studies for this tragedy and attack at the very roots so that such tragedies do not recur.”
He said it had created an atmosphere all over the world where everybody was concerned and affected. He said Pakistan responded spontaneously on the basis of principles and stood by the US and other allies in response to their own conviction that every life is precious.
“We are since then on the fight against terrorism and we will jointly be able to curtail and totally eliminate this menace”.
The governor said it would require a sustained and close cooperation, sharing of intelligence and resources which will certainly get us all the desired results.
He observed that one could not ever be a substitute for a loss of life but certainly our prayers and sympathies were with the affected families and for those who lost their loved ones.
At the same time, he continued, we must make a resolute decision and carry on with this task of fighting terrorism in all forms at all fronts.
“I think the day is not far when, God willing, we will be successful” the governor added.
Speaking on the occasion, the US ambassador in Pakistan, Nancy Powell, thanked the guests for having taken the time to join for a moment of remembrance on the eve of the first anniversary of the terrorist attacks on Sept 11, 2001.
She said the exhibition opening tonight, “Headlines of History,” included reproductions of the front-page coverage of those tragic events.
The photographs and news stories from over 40 newspapers — newspapers from the United States, Pakistan and many other countries of the world — depict not only the horrific scenes at the World Trade Towers and the Pentagon, but also the indomitable humanity and courage with which Americans and other responded to that tragedy.
“Your presence here this evening not only honours those who died in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania exactly a year ago tomorrow, but also bears witness to our collective commitment to the campaign against terrorism”.
It was not America’s tragedy alone: citizens from more than 90 countries — including Pakistan — were killed in those attacks.—APP
