European share markets fall

Published September 4, 2002

LONDON, Sept 3: European share markets fell to their lowest levels in almost a month on Tuesday as concern about the slow pace of recovery in corporate earnings, pre-September 11, jitters and heavy losses in Asia whacked sentiment.

Across the 12-nation euro zone, the Euro Stoxx 50 index fell 2.6 per cent to 2,571.6 points.

The British FTSE 100 index dropped 2.4 per cent to 4,081.0 points, the German DAX 30 index lost 3.6 per cent to 3,478.6 points and the French CAC 40 index gave up 2.1 per cent to 3,203.9 points.

The euro climbed to $0.9917.

With no lead from New York where markets had been closed on Monday for the Labor Day holiday, traders were left to reflect on steep falls in Asia that saw the Tokyo stock market plunge 3.2 per cent to a 19-year low on Tuesday.—AFP
