LONDON, Sept 2: India’s leading cricketers asked their board Monday for “clarification” of the terms of their Champions Trophy contracts.
The announcement came after a team meeting in London ended Monday with the participation of India’s frontline cricketers in next week’s one-day event in Sri Lanka still uncertain.
They remain concerned about how commercial restrictions in the tournament contract would affect sponsorship deals already signed by individual players.
India are currently in London preparing for the decisive fourth and final Test against England at The Oval here on Thursday.
After the meeting concluded India tour manager Ranga Reddy told AFP: “Earlier today the players gave a letter to the board seeking clarification about the terms of their Champions Trophy contracts.
“They are concerned about how the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) decision to use image rights (from the Trophy) for six months after the completion of the tournament will affect their own personal sponsorships.
“They are now awaiting a response from the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India).
“I do not expect a final decision today (Monday) but maybe tomorrow,” Reddy said.
India’s players have repeatedly expressed their unhappiness with the the terms of the Trophy contract drawn up by the ICC.
One sticking point is the clause which prevents players advertising rival products to those of the event sponsors for 30 days before and after the tournament, as well as during the competition itself, even if they have pre-existing agreements.—AFP
