Younis and Misbah sparkle in easy win

NAIROBI, Sept 1: Younis Khan hit an unbeaten 87 as Pakistan cruised to a seven-wicket victory over Kenya in the third match of the triangular one-day tournament Sunday.

The 24-year-old right-hander earned the Man-of-the-Match award for his 91-ball knock which included one six and 11 fours.

Younis came to the crease in the fourth over with Pakistan reeling at 13 for two, sharing an unbroken fourth-wicket partnership of 127 with Misbah-ul-Haq which took Pakistan to their target in the 39th over.

Misbah finished unbeaten on 50, including three fours, as Pakistan recovered from their humiliating 224-run defeat by Australia on Friday.

“We played a much better cricket today,” Pakistan captain Waqar Younis said. “We batted and bowled well but we were still slack in the field. We should improve more in future matches.”

His Kenyan counterpart Steve Tikolo paid tribute to Pakistan’s batting.

“We were not up to the scratch with bowling but on the whole I think Pakistan batted very well,” Tikolo said.

Kenyan coach Sandeep Patil paid the price for playing Ravindu Shah who broke his big toe on Saturday during bowling practice.

“I decided at the last minute to play him and not let the team know that he had a broken toe lest the team morale suffered and I appreciate his guts,” Patil said.

“It is unfortunate that Ravindu and Hitesh Modi will miss the rest of the tournament but we are hoping for the best against Australia tomorrow,” Patil added.

Modi broke his middle finger against Pakistan on Thursday after being struck by a ball from Shoaib Akhtar.

Chasing Kenya’s paltry total, Pakistan lost openers Saeed Anwar and Shoaib Malik in the first four overs.

Saeed was caught by wicket-keeper David Obuya off Martin Suji for two runs, while Shoaib Malik was trapped lbw by pace bowler Thomas Odoyo for three.

Younis and Shahid Afridi led Pakistan’s revival with a third-wicket partnership of 41 before the latter was caught at third man by Tony Suji off Joseph Angara for 31.

Earlier, Kenya opener Kennedy Obuya made 59, including two sixes and five fours, as the hosts were bowled out for 179 in the 43rd over after winning the toss.

Wasim Akram, Shoaib Akhtar, Waqar Younis, Afridi and Abdul Razzaq took two wickets apiece.

Kenya lost two quick wickets, Ravindu bowled by Shoaib Akhtar for one and Tikolo caught by wicket-keeper Rashid Latif off Wasim for three.

Vice-captain Thomas Odoyo and Kennedy Obuya shared a third-wicket partnership of 61 before Odoyo was caught at mid-on by Shoaib Akhtar off Younis for 28.

Kenyan hopes of a respectable total ended when Kennedy Obuya was out in the 32nd over, bowled by a Shoaib Akhtar yorker for 59.

Pakistan beat Kenya by four wickets in the first match of the tournament on Thursday.
