Jones leads chase for golden jackpot

BRUSSELS, Aug 31: All four athletes still in contention for a share of the Golden League jackpot swept to victory at the sixth meeting of the year Friday, Marion Jones leading the way with a late burst in the women’s 100 metres.

The triple Olympic champion looked to be trailing in third place after 60 metres but powered to victory in 10.88 seconds after her late surge, 0.02 seconds ahead of Ukrainian rival Zhanna Pintusevich-Block.

The Ukrainian sprinter, the only woman to have beaten Jones in a 100 metres final since 1997, finished 0.07 seconds in front of third-placed Tanya Lawrence of Jamaica.

Felix Sanchez of the Dominican Republic celebrated his 25th birthday with victory in the men’s 400 metres hurdles, Moroccan Hicham El Guerrouj triumphed in the 1,500 metres and Mexican Ana Guevara powered home in the women’s 400 metres.

All four remain unbeaten after the first six Golden League meets this year and only need to win in Berlin on September 6 to claim a share of the prize of 50 kilograms of gold.

In the surprise of the evening, American Tim Montgomery beat his more-fancied compatriot Maurice Greene to win the 100 metres for the second Golden League meeting in a row, running a season’s best time of 9.91 seconds.

Earlier, Sanchez won the men’s 400 metres hurdles in a time of 47.99 seconds after dipping ahead of Frenchman Stephane Diagana.

Diagana had to settle for second in 48.05 while American Joey Woody was third in 48.39.

Morocco’s El Guerrouj, cheered on by an enthusiastic crowd of 47,000 in the Roi Baudouin stadium, edged out Kenya’s Bernard Lagat for the 1,500m title but failed to beat his world record of 3:26.00 set in Rome in 1998.

Earlier this week, the Moroccan said this would be his last bid for the Golden League jackpot because the required training schedule was too heavy.

Mexico’s Guevara cruised to victory in the women’s 400 metres after shaking off American Michelle Collins coming out of the final bend.

In the women’s 1,000 metres, Mozambique’s Maria Mutola brought the crowd to their feet, when she opened a 30-metre lead before racing to the line in a year’s best time of 2:30.12.

American Montgomery produced the shock of the night with his victory over Greene in the men’s 100 metres for the second Golden League meeting in a row.

Olympic and world champion Greene finished sixth in a lacklustre 10.11 seconds, behind Portugal’s Francis Obikwelu and Commonwealth Games champion Kim Collins of St Kitts and Nevis, who were equal second in a time of 10.01.
