Arooj set to make amends

By Aftab Gilani

LAHORE, Aug 24: Five-year-old chestnut mare Arooj, beaten in her previous outing, should make amends this time when she contests in the feature event of the Lahore Gymkhana races at the Racecourse Sunday.

Arooj is appearing in the sixth and last race. The Kot Adu Plate, a class III, IV and V handicap event, to be run over the sprinting distance of 900 metres. She has the advantage of being a fast sprinter among the field of ten, if there are no last- minute withdrawals.

Besides she is in top form and is a consistent performer these days, having won four races and placed second twice in six previous outings.

The only disadvantage she has is that she is carrying nine stones and eight pounds (9-8) weight in the handicap. But speed has won the handicap more often than not.

However, it depends upon the rider as to how crafty he is to get the best out of his mount. Last time she was ridden by jockey Salah-ud-Din (II), who was out-of-form because he rode the mare after a long absence from the track.

Even at this handicap the mare is capable of winning the event provide a good rider is engaged. Half Love and Desert Dream can be her closest rivals.

The racing fans may witness a close contest between three fillies in the fifth and supporting event, the Muzaffarabad Plate, a class VII division I & II combined, also to be run over 900 metres.

They are: four-year-old bay filly On On, three-year-old chestnut filly Rukhtas Again and four-year-old bay filly Lucky Credit Queen.

However, out of the three fillies, Rukhtas Again is fancied to edge out others keeping in view her facile victory on Aug 11 last. Rukhtas Again is a good looking daughter of Dexter out-of- Iqtadar.

A card of six events has been drawn for the afternoon. All races will be contested over the distance of 900 metres. The first race will be held at 2.30 pm.
