Dravid rescues India

NOTTINGHAM, Aug 12: The second Test ended in a draw with the Indians declaring their second innings at 424 for eight.

India’s hero was Rahul Dravid who scored a century while skipper Saurav Ganguly was unlucky to miss the three figures when he got out at 99.

The right-hander needed some fortune before celebrating his 11th Test hundred and his first against England with an extra cover drive and a flourish of the bat to a packed Trent Bridge.

He was finally dismissed lbw by Dominic Cork for 115 after a watchful five-hours 40 minute occupation.

By tea the touring side had moved on to 315 for four, 55 in credit, as England’s hopes of forcing a 2-0 series lead as well as a fourth successive victory on home soil began to fade.

India had resumed on 99 for two and Dravid first put on 163 with Tendulkar, then 135 with skipper Saurav Ganguly (81 not out) for the fourth wicket as the home seam attack spluttered to a halt under the first prolonged sunshine of the match. Vangipurappu Laxman was two not out at the break.

Dravid’s innings though, while commendable for its patience on a perfect strip, could not match the quality of Tendulkar’s 92.

After middling almost every shot he attempted, Tendulkar inexplicably missed out on a 30th Test century to Michael Vaughan’s occasional off-spin.
