PESHAWAR, Aug 10: An accountability court here on Saturday indicted a former commissioner of the income tax department, Abdul Ali Khan, on charges of corruption and corrupt practices.
The accused pleaded not guilty and decided to stand trial. The court presided over by Miftauddin Khan fixed 22nd for next hearing and summoned three prosecution witnesses.
The prosecution has charged the accused of possessing assets disproportionate to his known sources of income, which is an offence under National Accountability Bureau Ordinance, 1999. The prosecution claimed that he possessed assets to the tune of Rs 18.4 million.
REMAND EXTENDED:A former additional director of Primary Education department, NWFP, Ms Sartaj Nazneen, was further remanded for nine days in the custody of the NAB by an accountability court here on Saturday.
Ms Nazneen, the first women arrested by the NAB in NWFP, was earlier remanded for five days. An investigation officer, Qazi Hameeduddin, appeared for the NAB and contended that during her five-day custody the accused had revealed some facts about the alleged scam in which the accused was arrested with some other officers and contractors.
Advocate Zaffar Abbas Zaidi appeared for the accused and opposed extending her further custody with the NAB. He stated that being a women the court should adopt lenient view. He further stated that some women were also charged in the Ghazi Barotha land acquisition scam, but the bureau had not arrested them. He informed the court that the accused had a two-year daughter and she had to look after her.
In the instant case the accused are charged of releasing amounts to the contractors without following the rules and regulations before the supply of furniture, jute-mates, chalks, etc for which the amount was meant for.
