MUNICH, Aug 9: After winning four silver medals in the past, Russian Olga Kuzenkova finally took her first major career hammer throw title at the European championships Friday.
Kuzenkova, 31, won with a massive throw of 72.94 metres in her fourth attempt after Olympic champion Kamila Skolimowska of Poland had temporarily led with 72.46m.
Skolimowska finally had to settle for silver with that result and Manuela Montebrun of France won the bronze with 72.04m.
Kuzenkova had always been among the favourites, but finished second at the 1998 European championships, the 1999 and 2001 world championships as well as the 2000 Olympics.
Six further medal events were scheduled for later Friday: the women’s 200m, 100 metres hurdles and pole vault as well as the men’s 200m, 400m hurdles and javelin throw.
Later France’s Stephane Diagana won the men’s 400 metres hurdles title.—dpa
