KARACHI: New law to help Pakistani prisoners return home

KARACHI, Aug 4: The government will give a sympathetic consideration to all applications of the Pakistanis serving jail terms in other countries and will bring them home under the new ordinance.

“We want to facilitate them to serve their remaining terms at jails near their homes in the country,” Interior Minister Lt- Gen Moinuddin Haider (retired) said, while talking to newsmen at an orientation ceremony of SZABIST here on Sunday.

The minister said several applications were already pending with him in this regard.

“If they (Pakistani prisoners) request us, their applications will definitely be considered on humanitarian grounds.”

The government on Saturday promulgated an ordinance pertaining to repatriation of foreign nationals convicted in Pakistan and Pakistani citizens convicted in other countries.

According to the ordinance, the convicts have to make a formal request to the respective governments for their repatriation to their home countries where they would serve the rest of the term of sentence.—APP/PPI
