Arooj on course for fourth victory

By Aftab Gilani

LAHORE, Aug 3: Five-year-old chestnut mare Arooj, with a brilliant hat trick behind her, starts off as the day’s best, when the Lahore Gymkhana races, gets under way Sunday.

She is contesting in the sixth and feature event, a class III, IV and V combined handicap race, to be contested over 900 metres.

Arooj bred at Zaheer stud farm near Peshawar has already registered three consecutive wins within a month to salvage the reputation of her father, Live For Others as none of his progenies have shown a matching performance.

Live For Others’ stud owner was so disgusted that he sold him for a paltry Rs 40,000 only a couple of years back.

However, Arooj , will have to face a strong challenge from the Jet Master (Al trui-Pretty Face) and Admiral’s Way (Yateem-Surprise Package). Both are capable of proving themselves constant thorns in her side.

On On, the four-year-old bay filly from Shogun out-of-Basant Aie, is another thoroughbred that looks set to steal the top honours in the fifth and supporting event over the same distance.

With jockey Shahid Rehman perhaps in the saddle, On On is on course for making it two in-a-row. The bay gelding Crysler, the grey colt Al Zarrar and the bay filly Early Bird will be going all out to register an upset victory.

Early Bird behaved erratically and had planted in the starting gate on her previous outing on July 14. Her entries were stopped for two weeks. if she behaves and takes a proper start she can upset the apple-cart.

In the fourth race there are two chance contestants owned by the same owner. They are the grey Imagine If and the bay filly Royal Bullet. To whom the owner fires should win. Otherwise Asif Love and Golden Wings may decided the issue.

The third race has the biggest field of 18 runners, barring last-minute withdrawals. The field is studded with good sprinters, at least six of them standing an equal chance. This should be an interesting race which may provided both thrills and shrills for the race-goers.

A card of six events will be decided in the afternoon. All events will be contested over 900 metres. The first race will start at 2.30 pm.
