KHAIRPUR, July 30: A 200-foot-wide breach developed in the Mirwah Canal, near the Therhi Bridge, on Tuesday.
The Mirwah Canal had been flowing in full swing since the last four days. On Tuesday, around 9am, a 200-feet-wide breach developed due to which a portion of the Therhi Bridge protective wall fell, while another portion developed cracks.
The bridge was immediately closed. The vehicles were now moving through the National Highway bypass. However, heavy vehicles were prohibited to pass through the bypass as the bridge on the Rohri Canal at Luqman had already been banned for them.
Khairpur, Kumb, Kot Diji, Thari Mirwah, Faiz Ganj, and Bozdar Wada have been cut off for going to Sukkur. Now people have to travel through the Shah Hussain Chowk bypass. Even people from Khairpur will have to travel through the lengthy route of the Shah Hussain Chowk bypass.
Likewise, residents of Karamabad, Therhi, Babarloi, Vistro Wahan, Ghari Mori, Priyaloi and about 100 other villages are using the lengthy route through the National Highway bypass via the Shah Hussain Chowk.
Meanwhile, the water of the Mirwah Canal has been diverted into the Rohri Canal, which was closed due to a breach near the Hala breach a day earlier to avoid any loss to life or crops.
The Mirwah Canal has been closed from the Sukkur Barrage due to which four Talukas — Khairpur, Kot Diji, Thari Mirwah and Faiz Ganj — will remain without irrigation water.
