KARACHI: MQM elections

Published July 30, 2002

KARACHI, July 29: Afaq Ahmed and Amir Khan were elected unopposed on Monday, as chairman and secretary-general of the Mohajir Qaumi Movement (MQM) respectively, for another set of three year terms.

According to a member of the election committee (EC), none of the MQM leaders submitted nomination papers against either of them for the same slots, which resulted in their selection without any opposition.

He said the EC had received some 28 applications for 15 posts of the Central Executive Committee and Central Cabinet — 12 for the seven-member Central Cabinet and 16 for eight seats of Central Executive Committee.

He said a final list of candidates would be released after carrying out the necessary work.

Polling through a secret ballot system would be held on August 1, in which elected town, divisional and tehsil office bearers would cast their votes to elect central office bearers.—PPI
