Arooj completes hat trick

LAHORE, July 28: Fancied chestnut mare, Arooj completed a hat trick when she stormed home to win the supporting event run over 900 metres during the Lahore Gymkhana races at the Racecourse Sunday.

The winner backed with confidence at 80 to 100 was steered brilliantly by jockey Aamar Parvez, her regular partner in the saddle. The mare had earlier to her credit back to back victories on July 7 and July 21 under the same rider.

Arooj defeated the second favourite bay colt Thunder Storm with M. Hanif astride by four-and-a-half lengths easily. Green Hill and Crysler completed the frame. In all, 14 ran for this fourth event in the racing order. Arooj clocked 55 3/5 seconds over the distance.

The outstanding performance of the day came in the fifth and feature event by the five-year-old bay Blu’s Wendy, who beat fancied bay gelding Think Thank by a length. Half Love finished third another two lengths back while Polo Gambler completed the board, one-and-a-quarter length further behind. Only six ran in this last event of the day , the Kasur Plate, a class IV & V combined handicap race.

Jockey Aamar Parvez and Riding boy M. Zeeshan shared the day’s riding honours, winding up the day’s proceedings with a double each.

Aamar Parvez steered Silk Route in the second race and Arooj in the fourth while M. Zeeshan brought in Russian Pet in the opener and Seendak in the third race.

Three favourites obliged the punters in a card of only five races. All events were contested over the sprinting distance of 900 metres.

Long shot Russian Pet cruised to an easy victory in the first race to defeat fancied Dhandhana and Dancing Margina in the same order. Blu’s Wendy was the other long shot to sprang a surprise in the fifth and last race.
