LAHORE, July 27: A small but competitive card of five events will be competed when the Lahore Gymkhana races gets underway at the Racecourse Sunday.

The feature event, the Kasur Plate, a class IV and V combined handicap race, has only six runners barring last-minute withdrawals. Of them three are on chance to win. On the classification six-year-old gelding,

Think Thank looks a cut above in class vis-a-vis his five rivals. However, another bay gelding Polo Gambler and the five-year-old horse Blu’s Wendy are favourably placed in the handicap. Blu’s Wendy will be on the course after an absence of over two months.

All the three should fight it out. The remaining three Shah The Great, Half Love and Gambling Girl are adversely handicapped.

The supporting event, Raiwind Plate, a class VII division I and II (combined) has the biggest field of 14 runners, if there are no last-minute withdrawals.

On recent form and performance, at least four of them, namely, Arooj, Lake District, Crysler and Thunder Storm look to be in the fighting line, Arooj having a slight edge over the others.

If all are on try out this should be a good race to watch.

All races will be contested over the sprinting distance of 900 metres.

Meanwhile the Lahore Race Club (LRC) stewards have notified the newly framed rules for the change of riders on the mounts suspected of not performing on merit in races.

A margin of two races can be given to maiden runners provided the contestant is not a public fancy.

However, stewards have the right to change riders of such runners when considered appropriate.

If after the announcement of the change of rider an owner approaches the stewards and assures that his horse is on job-his rider might not be changed.

However, after the race if in the opinion of stewards the rider pulls that mount or the runner has not run on merit then the stewards will stop entry of the said runner for a minimum of six months and rider will also be punished to the maximum, if found guilty.

The LRC veterinary officer will thoroughly check the runners’ fitness before they leave paddock for the starting gates.

He will also recheck those whose riders are changed at the starting gates. The change of riders will immediately be announced on the public address system without any loss of time.

The first race will start at 3.00 pm.
