By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, July 22: What type of general knowledge and Islamic education is being imparted to our students in our schools and colleges can be well assessed from the howlers in the written examinations which were conducted by Sindh Public Service Commission during year 2001.

These examinations were conducted by the SPSC to recruit qualified staff to meet the requirement of different departments, particularly education, health, excise and police. Although the number of aspirants against the advertised posts was many times more against the actual requirement, in almost all cases the few vacancies were not filled in one go due to poor standard of general knowledge and merit.

For example, against 519 posts of ASIs, over 5,000 candidates were in the run and for 110 vacancies of excise inspectors, some 7,800 aspirants were in the run, but these vacancies were not filled in the first run as six posts were left for which 3,240 candidates had applied.

In the same manner, against 38 posts of Mukhtarkars, there were 9,470 in the run.
