Difficult task for Pakistan


KARACHI, July 19: Pakistan bridge team is likely to qualify for the semifinal in the Commonwealth Championship being held in United Kingdom.

Pakistan has already sharing third spot with Wales in the championship. At this stage when two more matches are remaining before the conclusion of the qualifying round, Patron 1 is leading the bunch of fifteen teams in Group B with 227 Victory Points, followed by Australia 218, Pakistan and Wales, both join third spot with 208 VPs.

Pakistan team comprising Yousuf Talpur, Tufail Shaikh, Masood Mazhar, Tariq Rasheed Khan, Sarfraz Khan and Gulzar Bilal have to face the top team Australia which may decide the fate of qualifying teams. Pakistan suffered in the 11th round when they played a draw against lowly Guyana.

It may be recalled that Pakistan suffered a setback when selected players were refused visa by the British Consulate on the pretext that they would issue visa under the new policy.

Pakistan Bridge Federation then had to select the players from those who had the British visa. From the original selected team only Masood Mazhar and Yousuf Talpur are playing for the team.

Following are the teams’ position both the groups after 12 rounds; Group A-Canada 250, Patron 2, 40, India 216, England 202, Zimbabwe 189, Jamaica 182, Trinidad 174, Scotland 168, Singapore 165, Isle of Man 161, Sri Lanka 160, Jersey 158, Kenya 157 Angigue & Barbuda 145, Mauritius 139 Victory Points.

Group B- Patron I, 227, Australia 218, Pakistan 208, Wales 208, Bermuda 197, Northern Ireland 193, South Africa 188, Malaysia 183, Guemsey 175, Gyana 167, Malta 164, Uganda 163, St. Lucia 156, Barbados 150 & Tanzania 124 Victory Points.—APP
