KARACHI: Fishermen offer prayers

Published July 20, 2002

KARACHI, July 19: A large number of fishermen gathered at the Karachi Fish Harbour after Friday prayers to seek the blessings of Allah for a prosperous new fishing season.

Commodore Syed Tayyab Naqvi, chairman Karachi Fisheries’ Harbour Authority (KFHA), Shafi Jamot, vice-chairman of the Fishermen’s Cooperative Society (FCS), and all the FCS elected directors offered special prayers. Arrangements were also made for langar (free food) on the occasion.

The congregation was part of special payers offered every year to mark the beginning of the new season. The government under the Fisheries’ Ordinance 1980 imposes a ban on catch of fish and shrimps for two months to protect the species.

An FCS official said the provincial government is likely to lift the ban on Saturday.—PPI/APP
