KARACHI, July 17: Two accused who allegedly masterminded a plan of attack on President General Pervez Musharraf’s motorcade were on Wednesday produced before judicial magistrate Malir-V, Karachi.
Accused Mohammad Imran and Mohammad Hanif, in their confessional statement stated that they, in connivance with Inspector Waseem Akhter of Pakistan Rangers, had planned to assassinate General Pervez Musharraf during his referendum campaign on April 26, in Karachi.
The accused further stated that Inspector Waseem Akhter was deputed at Karachi Airport who was fully aware of the president’s schedule. In order to fulfil their nefarious design, he purchased a Suzuki car and equipped it with 500 kgs highly explosives material and parked the car in front of Falaknaz Arcade, on main Sharea Faisal, Karachi.
Explosives kept in the car was connected with a remote-controlled device which they handed to one Kamran and went to offer prayers at the Awami Markaz, Karachi, they stated.
Meanwhile, they came to know that due to unknown reasons remote control did not function and in this way the conspiracy failed, they maintained.
Both the accused were produced before the Judicial Magistrate, Karachi South on July 15, where they admitted that they were also involved in bomb blast in front of the US Consulate in Karachi.
The same court, following identification parade and recording statements of witnesses u/s 164, sent them to jail custody.
Later, investigation department of Sindh police requested the court to call the accused in case 94/2002 registered against them u/s 120-A.—PPI
