Omer shifted to death cell

By Our Correspondent

HYDERABAD, July 15: Omer Sheikh, condemned to death by an Anti-terrorism Court here on Monday in Daniel Pearl kidnapping and murder case, was shifted to condemned ward, known as Mansoor Ward, by the central jail administration after the verdict was announced. He was the 80th prisoner to be kept at the ward.

Before his transfer, he was allowed a detailed meeting with his father, Saeed Sheikh. The jail authorities allow visitors to meet a condemned prisoner once in a week.

The other three convicts in the case, Salman Saqib, Adil Sheikh and Fahad Naseem have been kept in normal cells at the jail and they would be allowed a one-hour stroll outside their ward.

No food, brought from outside, is allowed to be served to the prisoners without checking.

A jail official said that the shifting of Omer Sheikh to the Central Prison, Karachi, could not be ruled out but it was up to the Home Department to take a decision in this regard.

The original venue of trial was Karachi but the case was moved to Hyderabad on April 30 under an order of the Sindh High Court. The Advocate General, Sindh, Raja Qureshi, in his petition, had complained of threats from the accused.
