KOHAT, July 14: Pakistan People’s Party on Sunday asked President Pervez Musharraf to hold free and impartial elections under an interim setup acceptable to all the parties.

Speaking at a press conference, Kohat PPP President Nadir Khan Khattak said that the party would never accept the proposed constitutional package.

He observed that the main purpose of President Musharraf’s constitutional amendments was to oust former prime minister Benazir Bhutto from politics, which, he said, would not be allowed.

He said Ms Bhutto was the leader of the biggest party and any attempt to bar her from politics would lead to unrest.

He demanded that the election commissioner should immediately be replaced by a person acceptable to all the political parties.

He said the Pakistan People’s Party would not accept the elections held under the  election commissioner appointed by President General Pervez Musharraf.

“Introducing any amendments to the Constitution is the responsibility of the elected parliament and not a dictator, whose ambition to make Pakistan a military state had been exposed,” the PPP leader remarked.
