LAHORE, July 10: Punters reaped rich harvest when fancied horses won four of the five events in the mid-week Lahore Gymkhana races at the Racecourse Wednesday.
The punters started the day on a right choice, the even-money favourite bay mare Lovely Diana, who strode to an easy success in the opener. The odds-on favourite mare Dillagi, 5 to 4 bay colt Dhandhana and even-money favourite gelding Burrat Again obliged them in the second, third and fourth race.
However, the long shot bay Rambo Prince registered a shock defeating the fancied Abr-e-Bahar by a length in the fifth race. Abr-e-Bahar was ridden by Parvez Bhatty like a novice which cost him the race.
Had there been any good rider on Abr-e-Bahar he would have won. Royal Man and Jehandar completed the frame. Incidentally, both Rambo Prince and Abr-e-Bahar are trained by Akhtar Mir, who has a reputation that his favourites’ seldom win.
The sixth, which was the feature event of the afternoon was cancelled due to lack of runners. At the time of declaration of riders, two hours before the start of the day’s racing, three horses were withdrawn and as many were left-in the field.
Those withdrawn were Morning Noor, Storm Bird and Incognito. The Lahore Race Club (LRC) stewards cancelled the race, thus reducing the afternoon card to five events.
This is for the second consecutive race day that the main event has been cancelled for want of runners. Last Sunday the feature event was also cancelled.
However, the LRC stewards allowed the third race to be run in which only five runners were left after the last-minute withdrawal of Top Gun and Haroon Prince,
The most impressive performer of the day was the three-year- old bay colt Dhandhana in the third race. This colt from King Of Sexony out-of-Reema won to his liking on the first try out to register his racing career’s maiden victory. The winner is trained by Alberooni.
Riding boy Shahid Mustafa stole the day’s riding honours bringing home two winners. He first brought in Dillagi in the second race and then piloted home Rambo Prince in the fifth race to excel among riders.
