KARACHI: Parking fee without facilities must go: Naimat

KARACHI, July 4: The City Nazim, Naimatullah Khan, has asked EDO Finance, Shoaib Siddiqui, to consider ways and means how to mitigate complaints of people who are being charged for parking their vehicles in the city areas.
Naimatullah Khan issued this directive at a press conference held on Thursday at the City Government Secretariat in Civic Centre, when his attention was drawn towards public grouse about charged parking without owning any responsibility or extending any facility, and extending its limit and rate without any proper justification.
“Personally, I am not in favour of charged parking without providing any facility. The complaint should be looked into to see what risk cover could be provided to owners parking their vehicles in the charged-parking areas.
In absence of uniforms to employees posted to receive charges for parking vehicles, anyone with fake receipts could collect the money under the garb of charged parking fee. Even on all such issued receipts, the City Government seal is not readable and the payer of the charged fee is often found arguing on the account.
Shoaib Siddiqui, present at the press conference, said that charged parking had been extended to shopping areas after receiving the request from the police and shop owners that the record of charged parking showed a decline in vehicle theft from all such areas.
He, however, promised to see that the rate of charged parking be reconsidered and that the staff on duty had proper uniforms with standard receipts to check fake collectors.
He also said that he would arrange a meeting with concerned officials and journalists to sort out what risk could be covered for charged parking.
In reply to another question, the City Nazim said that under the given situation and powers bestowed, his conscience was satisfied with the progress achieved by the City Government during the last 10 months.
He said that work on a few roads may not have started yet, but on many other important roads, repairs and carpeting was in progress such as Nishtar Road, Ibn-i-Sina Road, Hawkesbay Road, Mauripur Road, Shershah Suri Road, Rashid Minhas Road and Allama Shabbir Usmani Road along with many intersections and parks either developed or being developed.
