Peerowal farms again without water

By A Correspondent

MULTAN, July 3: The government once again stopped irrigation water supply to Peerowal farms of the Punjab Seed Corporation in Khanewal district on Wednesday.

Reports said all the channels that supply water to chaks 86, 75, 87, 83, 85, 82 and 81 (10-Rs) of Peerowal farms had been closed at source suspending the water supply again which was restored on Monday.

The authorities had suspended water supply and posted police at source of all the water channels on June 18 last in order to implement the Punjab government order to uproot the sown cotton.

However, on June 26 last, the Lahore High Court granted a status quo to the tenants against any government action and as regard to the government move to change their status to lessees from tenants. The water supply was, however, restored after five days of court orders.

It may be added here that Peerowal tenants along with their counterparts on all the state and military farm lands in the province have launched a struggle for ownership, claiming that they have been cultivating the lands of their tenancies for more than a century.

SHOT DEAD: A youth was shot dead by two unidentified men in Jalilabad here on Wednesday.

Farrukh Masood was passing through the Jalilabad area on a motorcycle when two motorcyclists opened fire on him. Masood was rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police have yet to register a case.
