Bailiff recovers 43 kiln workers

GUJRANWALA, July 3: At least 43 kiln workers, including seven women and 22 children, were recovered on Wednesday by a local court’s bailiff from a kiln owner’s quarters at Kalarabadi.

Some families of Bosal, Mandi Bahauddin, had reportedly reached an agreement with Rana Khushi Muhammad for labouring at his kiln. After expiry of the agreement, the kiln owner allegedly manhandled men and women and confined them along with their children to his quarters.

A widow, Fatima Bibi, somehow succeeded to escape and filed a plaint in court of district and sessions judge Chaudhry Asad Raza through her counsel Muhammad Rashid Mirza. The judge inducted a bailiff who raided the place and recovered from there 43 people and produced them before court.

Telling about their miseries to court, they said the kiln owner had not provided them meal and tied them with iron chains.

Later, the kiln owner was also taken into custody by the bailiff on the orders of the judge and produced before court. The owner informed court that he had lent them heavy amounts in advance and that the agreement had not expired.

However, the complainant widow pardoned him on the condition that he would allow them to return to their villages.

The judge adjourned the petition till next hearing.

FOUR COPS BOOKED: Four policemen, including an SI, were booked by Saddar police on the charge of releasing the main accused of firing case here on Wednesday.

Naushera Virkan police had arrested Mian Sanaullah, Irshadullah and Muhammad Qaiser for injuring general councillor Mian Nasir a few days ago. They were escorted to court for physical remand by SI Muhammad Younas and constables Younas, Imran and Sakhawat Hussain. Judicial magistrate Khalid Mahmood gave a three-day physical remand of the accused. Later, policemen took lunch from the arrested accused in a hotel at Chand Da Qila by-pass from where the main accused, Mian Sanaullah, was released by the SI while the remaining two accused were handed over to constables. They locked up the two accused at Saddar police station and disappeared. When the duty officer of Saddar police station came to know about the episode, he got registered an FIR against the SI and three constables.

BODY RECOVERED: The beheaded body of a woman was recovered by Peoples Colony police here on Wednesday.

Police removed the body to the local civil hospital for autopsy.

Unidentified so far, the body was found lying on the waste in pieces in shopper bags. A case has been registered against the unidentified killer(s).

FOUR INJURED: At least four activists of two rival students’ organizations sustained injuries in a clash in sessions court here on Wednesday.

Police arrested the injured on the orders of the district and sessions judge and registered a case against them. An activist of Islami Jamiat Talaba, Naeem Bhatti, had been killed by three activists of the Muslim Students Federation (MSF) some three weeks ago. The judge was hearing the case of bail applications of the accused when Shahid Butt, Naufal Ishaq, Tauqir Iqbal and Arshad Aziz started falling out with their rivals and also threw bricks. As a result, they received injuries while the judge ordered the Civil Lines police to arrest them.

Meanwhile, the judge rejected the bail applications of accused Rana Munir Ahmad, Muhammad Asif and Muhammad Mushtaq and sent them to jail.

It is learnt that half a dozen accused were booked in the murder case and they all had been arrested by police.

SSP Muhammad Aslam Tarin had deployed a heavy police contingent in sessions court to avoid any untoward incident.

FARM LOANS: At least 25 centres have been set up in Gujranwala and Hafizabad districts where farmers are being provided agricultural loans through one-window operation.

This was stated by the regional manager of the Agricultural Development Bank at a meeting held here on Wednesday.

The meeting was told that agricultural loans were being provided to paddy farmers without any discrimination.

District Nazim Fiaz Ahmad Chattha, the district coordinating officer and other senior officers were also present on the occasion.
