KARACHI: Regular inspection of flyovers, bridges ordered
KARACHI, July 3: All concerned officers of the City Government have been directed to regularly and continuously inspect all the flyovers and bridges in the city and in case garbage dumps and other waste material is found underneath, the same be immediately removed so that the incident like the one which took place under Tin Hatti bridge may not recur.
A decision in this regard was taken during a visit to the site Wednesday by District Coordination Officer, Shafiqur Rehman Paracha along with elected representatives and concerned officers.
The DCO also directed the Works and Services Department of City Government, that the official assigned with the maintenance of this bridge be asked to explain when he visited Tin Hatti bridge last time and why he failed to report about the dumping of such garbage and material which caught fire and damaged the structure of the bridge.
Mr Paracha inquired the details regarding the strength test of the bridge pillars and said that the rehabilitation work be expedited so that the traffic movement on this bridge could be fully restored.
During the visit, the DCO and concerned elected representatives of the City Government also reviewed the arrangements made and measures taken to cope with the situation arising from possible rains in the city.
In this regard, the team visited Rashid Minhas Road, NIPA Chowrangi, Sohrab Goth, Liaquatabad and different areas of Jamshed Town, University Road and M.A. Jinnah Road.
The DCO directed the concerned Town Municipal Officers to ensure that all the drains passing through their respective areas are cleaned on priority basis.
He also took notice of certain population clusters in the bed of Lyari-river and instructed the officials to ensure that all such encroachments on the banks of Lyari and Malir rivers and other potential depression areas are warned of the hazards of possible flood situation.
He directed that locations of rain emergency and relief camps are identified and publicised for information of all concerned.
Shafiq Paracha said that in charges of these camps be immediately appointed so that they could start functioning with the first rain-shower.
The DCO Karachi directed the KBCA officials to ensure that proper steps are taken for the safety of residents of buildings which have been declared dangerous.
Meanwhile, Karachi City Government was engaged in taking all necessary measures to face any emergency situation in the case of heavy downpour.
All the City Towns have already finalised their respective rain emergency plans which were discussed in an earlier meeting held by DCO Karachi.
Another meeting in this regard is due to be held under the chairmanship of Nazim Karachi, Naimatullah Khan, at City Government Secretariat at Civic Centre on Thursday morning.
The meeting will be attended by Nazims of all the Towns as well as the representatives of all concerned departments, like KESC,KWSB, KBCA, SSGC, PTCL, KPT, Navy, Cantonments etc.—APP
