NAWABSHAH, July 2: The people of Sakrand blocked the National Highway on Tuesday in protest against the construction of a shopping centre at Latif Park.

The construction work started on Tuesday. The citizens who seemed to be annoyed over the cutting of trees started having a strong argument with the contractor.

When they came to know that the park was being converted into a shopping mall, they informed the Shehri Ittehad.

Soon many citizens — led by Mohammed Hussain, Yousuf Memon, and Qamar Buriro of the Shehri Ittehad, and Noor Ahmed Lakho of the PPP — went to the National Highway and blocked it.

They said that Latif Park was the only place in town which could be visited by their families and they would not allow a shopping centre to be constructed on the site.

After an hour, the Sakrand police arrived there and brought the situation under control.

The district Nazim, Ms Faryal Talpur also arrived there and assured the citizens that she would look into the matter on an urgent basis.

WOMAN BURNT: A woman, Ameera, was critically burnt when her in-laws tried to kill her by sprinkling kerosene oil on her in the absence of her husband and setting her on fire in Shahpur Jehanian, near Daulatpur, on Tuesday.

She was taken to the PMCH where she is said to be in a critical state.

Her husband, Basheer Solangi, has lodged an FIR with the Daulatpur police.

WATER SHORTAGE: The citizens of Nawabshah town are having a tough time as no water is being supplied from the Gujra Wah.

The water supply to the town was closed for 15 days on June 15 for remodelling of the 3rd mile cross regulator.

However, due to the inefficiency of irrigation officials the water supply could not be opened on June 30.

It has been learnt from reliable sources that the work is expected to be completed within a few days after which it would be possible to supply water.

District budget: The Nawabshah District Council unanimously approved its budget on Monday.

The budget of Rs1.226 billion was presented by District Nazim Ms Faryal Talpur on Saturday.

The district Nazim, while speaking at the council, said Rs10 million were deposited in the PLA account of the DCO by the government in April which would be spent on construction of new buildings of union councils with the permission of the district government.

Earlier, women councillors demanded TA/DA and other allowances, which was approved by the council.
