ISLAMABAD, June 30: Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf (PTI) on Sunday rejected the proposed constitutional amendments package, terming it violative of the Supreme Court’s verdict and aimed at subordinating elected institutions to the unelected individuals and bodies.

The party’s central executive committee (CEC) observed that the package was a way to minimising the role of political forces and imposing unconstitutional bodies and individuals over elected representatives.

A resolution adopted at the meeting stated: “It would render the constitution into an oppressive presidential form without the benefit of an elected president.

The parliament, the cabinet and the prime minister would be left at the mercy of the president and the National Security Council and would be no more than puppets in the hands of the president.”

It said the amendments were likely to destroy the federal parliamentary system by undermining the position and functions of the parliament, weakening the cabinet and the prime minister and introducing instability and insecurity.

According to the resolution the amendments violate the principle whereby the one who has the responsibility must have the authority. They reflected a lack of confidence in the democratic and electoral process, it said.

Later, briefing newsmen, PTI chief Imran Khan asserted that in his party’s view, any amendments to the Constitution were the exclusive domain of elected parliament and no other person or institution could be allowed to encroach upon those powers.

In reply to a question, he said: “I would only accept the position as prime minister in the new setup if I was satisfied that I could implement my party’s manifesto.”

He said the package was an attempt to concentrate more powers in the centre and deny autonomy to the provinces.

Imran said the mandate of the government to make amendments to the Constitution under the Supreme Court verdict was limited to day to day running of the government and electoral reforms conducive for the holding of free, fair and transparent elections.

Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf Secretary-General Mairaj Mohammad Khan and Vice-President Hamid Khan advocate, who is president of Supreme Court Bar Association, were also present.
