KARACHI, June 26: Police, on Wednesday, denied illegal detention of Ata-ur-Rahman Bokhari alias Naeem Bokhari, when a constitutional petition challenging the arrest of a high-profile activist of the proscribed sectarian organization, Lashkar-i- Jhangvi, came up before a division bench of the Sindh High Court.
When the petition of Kulsoom Bano, sister of detainee, filed through Aamir Mansoob Qureshi, came up before the bench comprising Justice Sabihuddin Ahmed and Justice S. Ali Aslam Jafri, the SHO of TPX police station and a CID inspector submitted that the alleged detenue was not in their custody.
Assistant Advocate General, Sindh, Habib Ahmed, appearing for the state, said that the police was denying the arrest.
Justice Shabbir was apparently not convinced by the police denial and observed: “There are reported cases how a person is shifted from one place to another, and we cannot close our eyes to that.”
Amir Mansoob Qureshi, counsel for the petitioner, submitted that the alleged detainee was picked up on June 16, and since then was being shifted from one place to another. He submitted that the CID had secret, inaccessible cells.
The bench then adjourned the matter to July 1, directing the AAG to ensure that comments were filed by Inspector General Police, Sindh, or some other responsible officer, along with an affidavit about the whereabouts of the alleged detenue.
